A native of New York City and graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Maud Simmons moved to Los Angeles to pursue a diverse painting career. Her commercial work is seen in movies and TV, in restaurants and hotels, and has been used for posters, cards, and advertising. Her personal work is ever-changing.
“I am struck with the fundamental beauty of an object, say a pepper, and become obsessed with that particular form, with it’s rich color and changing shape, and I will paint peppers for years, until one day I notice an amazing cloud formation and that vision fills my consciousness, and I paint skies for the next five years.”
In my most recent period, I am indulging in non-figuritive work. It feels like I woke up one morning and found that I could speak Italian/French/Chinese without having studied...the abstract work is a completely new language for me and it is thrilling.
My visual obsession infuses my choices and I am something of a ‘binge-painter’, where the work itself decides how it will shape itself and for how long it will fill my dreams and waking hours.

Davide Piubeni was born in Sarezzo, near the city of Brescia in Northern Italy.
He graduated from the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Brera, Milan, in 1994. His artistic career had its beginnings in Brazil, where he produced very large biblical scenes for the church of Viseu, later for the cathedral of Bragança and San Vicent of Paul, in Belem du Para.
On his return to Italy in 1995, he had two solo shows, in Brescia and Milan, depicting biblical scenes from the Old Testament. As the result of very favorable reviews, several dioceses in major Italian cities commissioned him to create new works for their walls.
Until 1998, Davide's paintings were done strictly in the studio, but that year he met a fellow artist who convinced him to become a plein air painter. He traveled throughout Western Europe where he would paint street scenes and would sell his work right from the spot where he painted them.
In Spain he met another artist who had painted in Los Angeles, but his finances only permitted him to go as far as Miami. There his sales improved enough to allow him to travel to Australia, where he continued to paint and sell on the streets of Sidney. He returned to Miami, where the demand for his work bloomed and he received numerous commissions by owners to paint their homes. He also exhibited at the Coral Gables Art Center gallery.
Later, he went to Guatemala to travel around the country, painting from his easel mountains, lakes, beaches, portraits and cities. At the end of that trip, he did a solo show at the Italian Cultural Center in Guatemala city.
He finally came to Southern California in 2000 on a 3-month visa, which required him to leave the country periodically until the sponsorship by a local gallery in 2003 granted him permanent status in the U.S. at which time he settled in Culver City. Being centrally located, he had easy access to all parts of the Los Angeles area where he avidly painted.
Through the fortuitous association with another artist, in 2004 Davide was introduced to the Beach Cities. The same year he was married to Veronica and they are now the proud parents of three children.
Davide and his easel have become a familiar sight on our street corners and along the Strand, from Playa del Rey to Palos Verdes. His small gallery at the corner of Highland and 39th in Manhattan Beach until 2009 was also an eye-catcher when driving into town from the north. Now he is now living in Culver City.
